De Palma even presents the mass murder she commits as forgivable, as it happens while Carrie is in an emotionless trance that her bullies have caused. They treat her without humanity, and in turn, she loses her humanity. While Carrie is a cautionary tale about the dangers of treating others poorly, the main source of fear in Thelma is the fear of oneself.
To that end, Trier wants us to identify with Thelma. Thelma is in almost every scene of her film, and there are several times when we share her subjective headspace. In reality, she is having a seizure on her hospital bed. While on her own, we watch her shuffling around her new apartment, scrolling through social media, and trying to get to sleep. Through these intimate moments, we learn about Thelma as an individual, and we are able to recognise and reflect on her internal conflicts, rather than simply observing the consequences of her external interactions.
Thelma has agency in her own story. Her powers were always innate within her, rather than a reaction to an outside force. Their relationship with their daughter is intrusive and controlling.
She is a caricature of abuse and religious fanaticism, and Laurie plays her with crazed eyes and wild mannerisms. She beats her daughter for any reason she can find, and is never close enough to her to show any affection. At its heart is a coming-of-age story, albeit that of a girl with awesome power. The direction is superb as is the writing : it does not waste words but relies on images instead, lending this particular film a rare potency and allowing the viewer to connect the dots as s he sees fit.
And the actors are more than up for the challenge - a skillful, emotive lot. Of course, it deals rather heavily with taboo topics - same-sex attraction, religiosity, mental illness - but it is not blunt or unwieldy.
Our picks tonight
It is done with elegance and a measure of doubt. In the end, this is a remarkably powerful film done with class. It will offend many, I imagine, but those interested in a subtle yet intense film could do far, far worse. A beautifully dark film with a twist at the end. When she leaves her sheltered home life, an idyllic bubble her devoutly religious parents curated for her, in order to attend college away from home, she is met with a world of new experiences Every and any interaction following was not the urgings of two ppl falling in love, but of one deciding what she wanted, setting eyes on a goal, in love, albeit, and gaining the prize.
The movie goes brilliantly beyond issues of sexuality, religion and the metaphysical and leaves you hovering, painfully over the issue of consent.

Would Anja have chosen Thelma on her own if she could? What awaits for Thelma with such power, how does she control it? Can she.
When you choose a film that leaves more questions than answers, you chose well. A great film, for sure:. Intriguing and brilliantly novel depiction of a struggle not everyone will suffer through, but a struggle that everyone should acknowledge not only exists, but wreaks havoc on many fragile, wavering souls hoping to be themselves without condemnation and isolation.
Thelma Movie Review & Film Summary () | Roger Ebert
If you are, know, love or care about anyone in the LBGTQ community, and, frankly, especially if you don't, you should see this movie and open your mind to understanding their experience. I want to clarify, first off, that this film is about mental illness, not supernatural powers, contrary to some reviewers. The director makes it crystal clear in many scenes that the supernatural effects Thelma experiences are not perceived by anyone aside from her and her family.

This is a classic Jamesian Turn-of-the-Screw style story telling! Slow at first, this film is very much worth watching. In this Norwegian film the ethereal pacing creates a sense of drama that one does not usually find in American movies. The soundtrack works very well too. Very well acted and departed from the Hollywood cliche. It's an unconventional coming of age story with surprising supernatural twists.
I found myself captivated by the protagonist's journey of falling in love and self discovery. I didnt really know what to expect from this movie, but I knew I liked the director so I gave it a go. Glad I did cause I love it! I now own this one.
I thought this was a very good movie. Kept me interested. It was different and good. A little dark and confusing sometimes, but I think they strive for that. One person found this helpful.
